The Tapajos is one of the largest clear-water rivers in the Amazon as well as one of the most scenic. The primary purpose of the Tapajos industrial waterway is to provide a pathway for large ships to export soy products from Northern Mato Grosso to the Amazon River. Ultimately the grain exports are destined for European ports to use as cattle feed.

Recently, three hundred people took part in a public hearing held in Santarem, including 60 Munduruku and Kaiaibi Indians, whose reserves would be affected by the project. The public hearing was requested by a group of governmental and non-governmental organizations from Santarem after discovering that local authorities had approved the Environmental Impact Assessment without expressing major concerns of the affected communities.
