Alessandra Korap Munduruku, a leader of the Munduruku Indigenous peoples from the Brazilian Amazon, has just been awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in recognition of her longstanding and extraordinary activism in defense of the Amazon rainforest and the rights of Indigenous peoples.
The Munduruku are calling for the demarcation of their lands in defense of the Amazon and against mining. Their resistance against British mining company Anglo-American led to a halt to mining operations in their territories in 2021 , but the threats continue.
Now they are petitioning the Brazilian government to declare their ancestral lands as protected Indigenous Territories, taking one step further towards halting industrial and illegal mining in the Amazon rainforest.
President Lula da Silva –
The Munduruku People are calling for the demarcation of their lands in defense of the Amazon and against mining operations.
Alessandra Munduruku, along with her community, have fought long and hard to campaign against the British mining company Anglo American, attempting to invade their ancestral lands. As a result of incredible efforts, the mining company was pressured to withdraw their mining requests from Munduruku territories, halting the expansion of their mining operations – a victory for the Munduruku people.
To secure a long-term victory, we need your support. President Lula, please join their efforts by prioritizing the declaration of the Sawré Muybu and Sawré Ba’pim Indigenous Territories. We urge you to meet with the Munduruku people and include them on the list of Indigenous Lands considered priorities for demarcation.
